“It shouldn’t be radical to have Indigenous people doing normal stuff.” “Isn’t it crazy that it’s 2021 and we’re still talking about how great it is that these people are real and have human characteristics?” Harjo told the New York Times. Reservation Dogs, which has aired five episodes to date, seems rightly uninterested in that distinction, bored with even having to make the case for full, interesting, multitudinous, even satirical indigenous characters. There’s undue weight placed on the first of something, the spotlight of representation where there is none and should be. Adolescence is a drag no matter where you’re from, yet there hasn’t been a show like this before: one set entirely at reservation, whose teens deal with the particular, often humorous complications as the Reservation Dogs (the health clinic Bear often hallucinates the spirit named William Knifeman, played by Dallas Goldtooth, who died when his horse rolled over him in battle – a roast of the dignified warrior type).

Reservation Dogs – the title is a nod to Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, though set at an unnamed reservation – nails the incredibly tricky task of depicting, with hyper-specificity and little compromise to non-Indigenous viewers, an experience most American audiences haven’t seen on TV while still being universally, compellingly relatable. The petty crime is supposed to fund a vague escape plan to California, spurred by the death of their friend Daniel, which they blame on dead-end location.īut no one is going anywhere. It’s that she ate too many flaming hot chips, which her crew – including de facto leader Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), sweet Cheese (Lane Factor) – stole, along with a delivery truck, in one of their many haphazard heists. When companion Elora (Devery Jacobs) gets admitted for stomach pains, it’s not that she’s pregnant, or chronically ill, or even having period cramps. The wait-times are interminable, the staff over-stretched and unamused – all the better for sardonic Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) to hawk her questionable meat pies outside. Instead, the “NDN Clinic” episode, directed by Navajo film-maker Sydney Freeland, wrings humor out of mundane dysfunction and too-human send-ups of Hollywood’s most consistent Native American tropes (the medicine man, the stoic warrior). Reservation Dogs, created by the Seminole and Muskogee film-maker Sterlin Harjo and Hollywood jack-of-all-trades Taika Waititi, does neither.

According to the general operating logic of the scant film and television portrayals of Native Americans to date – and there are few – the scenes inside should be dire, either chock full of thinly sketched stereotypes or a portrait of misery. The second episode of Reservation Dogs, FX’s mirthful dark comedy about a ragtag group of indigenous teens in rural Oklahoma, takes place almost entirely at a clinic run by the Indian Health Service. An excellent party game, Cash ‘n Guns allows up to eight players to pretend like they’re in the bloody finale of Reservoir Dogs. or a banana.Īny players left standing get their hands on the remaining loot, and the game continues for another eight rounds. Once players have their sights set, the bluffing begins: Did you really load your weapon or are you merely aiming a blank? Does one player hold a grudge? Are those diamonds really worth it? At this point, players have a choice of dodging (like folding in poker) or facing down the foam barrel of a gun. While the game does include foam pistols, we opted to use bananas for reasons, but mostly for potassium deficiency. Obviously, a group of criminals isn’t going to be the most generous bunch, so weapons are drawn almost immediately.

What a fun situation to simulate in a board game!Ĭash ‘n Guns wraps its standoff around the idea that a group of successful bank robbers needs to figure out how to divide their loot. Weapons are drawn, eyes squint, and the life or death bargaining begins.

Cash ‘n Guns is a bluffing game meant to capture the tension of the old movie and TV trope known as the “ Mexican standoff.” Beyond the surface-level problematic name, this trope is likely one you’ve seen many times in film.
